Panaji/Bhopal: The Goa government has announced that the upcoming Hindi film Chhaava, based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be tax-free in the state. The decision was confirmed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday evening.
“It gives pleasure to me to announce that movie Chhaava, based on the life & sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be tax-free in Goa,” Sawant stated.
He emphasized the significance of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy, calling his sacrifice an inspiration for the people. “The movie exploring the valor and courage of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj for Dev, Desh, and Dharma, played by Vicky Kaushal, is bringing the glorious history to the screen. The sacrifice of the second Chhatrapati of the Hindavi Swarajya, who valiantly fought against the Mughals and Portuguese, is an inspiration for all of us,” he added.
Shortly after Goa’s announcement, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also declared the film tax-free in his state. The move coincided with the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire and father of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films, stars Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, with Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna in prominent roles. The film aims to bring the legacy of the Maratha warrior to a wider audience, highlighting his struggles and sacrifices.
The decision to grant tax exemption to the film aligns with recent trends of promoting historical and patriotic cinema through government initiatives. With two states already making the film tax-free, industry experts anticipate further endorsements in other states with a historical connection to the Maratha legacy.
The film is expected to draw strong interest, particularly in Maharashtra and other regions where the Maratha empire played a crucial role in history.
